The 1975 Topps baseball set was a great opportunity to collect some amazing rookie cards. Jim Rice, Robin Yount, George Brett, and Gary Carter just to name a few.
There are also some other great cards inside this set and a variety of different card types, which is why collectors look at this card set fondly, even nowadays.
Let’s take a closer look at the set and pick out some of the best cards you’ll find inside.
Table of Contents
1975 Topps Set Info
In 1975, Topps released a set of cards that were available in different locations and packages. Some of these were available as card packs that you could buy together with chewing gum; others bought them as wax packs.
In terms of set size, this Topps set follows the majority of sets that were released in previous years. With 660 cards inside the set, it’s still quite a large one.
The majority of the cards were, of course, player cards, but there were also some special cards dispersed inside, such as:
- 1974 Season highlights
- MVPs
- League leaders
- Playoff highlights
- World series highlights
With these cards, you’ll find some much-needed variety.
In terms of looks and design, it’s fair to say that the 1975 Topps set followed a bit more colorful design compared to earlier sets released by this card company.
The borders of the cards typically used a two-colored scheme with various color combinations.
Some collectors find this design overly simplistic, others think it fits the era and the overall feel of the era perfectly.
Whatever you might think about these cards, there’s no denying the fact that the imagery on the cards improved somewhat compared to older Topps sets. On these cards, at least you’ll see players’ faces, which was sometimes not possible with older cards.
Best Cards from the 1975 Topps Baseball Set
Let’s take a look at the best cards from the 1975 Topps baseball set.
1975 Topps Hank Aaron 74’ Highlights #1
Where else could we start the show than with the #1 card from the 1975 Topps set, which commemorates Hank Aaron’s record-breaking home run?
On April 8, 1975, hammerin’ Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s home run record of 714 home runs as he hit number 715. This was a highly anticipated event with a massive crowd of over 50,000 people looking on as Aaron hit one home to break the record.
This was a great moment of significance in the history of the game that is still fondly remembered today.
Not only did Aaron break the home run record, but he also achieved another important victory culturally since he was one of the first major black superstars not only in baseball but in global sport.
Today, this card is one of the most valuable cards from the 1975 Topps set. In better conditions, it will cost a four-figure sum but it can be significantly more expensive for top-graded alternatives.
1975 Topps George Brett RC #228
George Brett is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable cards from the 1975 set. It’s also one of the most valuable cards considering this is a rookie card.
The truth is that George Brett is one of the more iconic players of the late 1970s and early 1980s. That’s why many collectors are looking for an opportunity to own one of his cards, and this one is the first on many people’s lists.
Brett made his first appearance for the Royals in August of 1973, but he didn’t make a big impact until 1975 when he became a regular for the team.
The card features a portrait of George Brett with a purple-green border and of course, his autograph. At higher grades, this card can cost several thousand dollars, but you’ll find it slightly cheaper at lower grades.
1975 Topps Nolan Ryan #500
If you’ve been following baseball for a while and if you like retro cards, then you probably need no introduction to Nolan Ryan.
He’s known for his incredible longevity with the longest career in the history of baseball with 27 seasons under his belt.
Ryan started his career in 1966 and ended in 1993, which is a testament to his professional character and determination.
The #500 1975 Topps card is not the only card of Ryan in this set, though. The other instance of this player in this set comes from the #5 card, which is a part of the Highlights subset.
Both are immensely popular and you’ll do well to pick up both since they are quite similar in terms of value. The #500 seems to be slightly more popular and thus also a bit more valuable, though.
1975 Topps Hank Aaron #660
We’ve already seen one card of Hank Aaron on this list from the Highlights subset, but this card deserves a special entry.
Of course, Hank Aaron is mainly known for his impressive home run record by the start of the 1975 season, which made both the Highlights card as well as his regular card some of the most popular cards from the set.
One thing that should be noted is that the #660 card is more commonly found in better conditions, which means that it tends to be more valuable than the earlier card. Both would be great additions to your collection if you’re a Hank Aaron fan.
1975 Topps Robin Yount RC #223
Robin Yount’s rookie card is another from a long list of amazing rookie cards that came inside the 1975 Topps baseball set.
Rob Yount played 19 seasons for the Brewers, making him one of the most iconic and legendary players to play for this team.
He was drafted in 1973 already but made his debut only in 1974. Today, we know him as a two-time winner of the AL MVP award (1982, 1989) as well as a Hall-of-Fame inductee.
Overall, this is one of the most popular cards from this card set.
