The 1984 Topps baseball set was one of the first sets to start mass-producing baseball cards for the market.
It was the consequence of high competition among card companies. This sparked competitiveness between Topps, Donruss, and Fleer. All of these companies wanted to make sure their cards get sold the most, so they started printing them on a large scale.
The result was that these baseball cards became easily available for everyone willing to buy them. Consequently, some of the prices started to go down, too.
Today, this is good news for everyone who’s looking to cop themselves a card from this set.
That Don Mattingly rookie card is looking inviting, and you might be able to get it for a good price, too.

About the 1984 Topps Baseball Set
Before we dive into the best cards from 1984, let’s talk about the set itself first for a moment.
Many collectors see the 1984 Topps set as one of the first modern card sets in history. Not only because of high production numbers but also because of the introduction of the Tiffany sets that dominated the card business for many coming years.
The Tiffany subset was rarer and more premium than the main set; it had only about 10,000 releases, which made it more popular among those who wanted to have an extra bit of rarity on their hands.
If you look at the 1984 Topps checklist, you’ll find 792 different cards with several subsets inside. The subsets include Highlights, League and Team Leaders, and All-Stars.
Looking at the cards, you’ll see that Topps followed a fairly similar design compared to the previous year’s design.
The cards still featured an action shot of the player in the middle with the player portrait following on the bottom of the card. The big letters on the left side of the card also provided for a simple yet effective stylistic touch.
One of the biggest advantages of this card set is that there are plenty of cards still available nowadays and most of them are kept in great condition, too. And the best thing is that you won’t have to spend as much as you would have had to for cards from some of the previous sets.
Best 1984 Topps Baseball Cards
The 1984 Topps baseball set is full of amazing cards, so let’s take a look at some of the best of them.
1984 Topps Don Mattingly RC #8
Let’s start with the most exciting card of the pack – the Don Mattingly rookie card. This card is the most recognizable card from this set and arguably one of the best rookie cards from the 1980s, too.
Don Mattingly made an instant impact in the league as he was included in the All-Star team in his first year already. He also won the 1985 AL MVP award, which makes him one of the most recognizable players from the 1980s.
Mattingly made his debut in 1982 already, so 1983 was technically his rookie year. However, he wasn’t included in any of the Topps sets from previous years, so 1984 was officially his rookie year with Topps.
In 1984, Mattingly won the batting title with an average of .343 and led the league with 207 hits. It was an amazing feat for such a young player.
From 1990 on, Mattingly struggled with injuries and back problems, so he was never quite able to regain some of his early form.
This card is the most recognizable card from 1984 and also the most valuable. But you should still be able to get it for a relatively low price.
1984 Topps Cal Ripken Jr. #490
Having won the 1983 World Championshing and the MVP award for the year, Cal Ripken’s 1984 Topps card was one of the most highly anticipated cards from this set.
It was the first card that many people wanted from this set, although Mattingly’s rookie card just slightly beats this one in terms of popularity.
You can get Ripken’s card for a low price nowadays. Because of high print numbers and easy availability, almost everyone should be able to get their hands on one of these and add them to their collections.
1984 Topps Nolan Ryan #470
The 1984 Topps Nolan Ryan card is still very popular among card collectors. That can be said of almost any Nolan Ryan card, for that matter.
This one will not be remembered for Ryan’s on-the-field successes. 1984 wasn’t the best of seasons for Nolan Ryan, but he still managed to impress with some of his performances.
Rather, it’s the imagery of the card and the style that impresses. This card has perhaps one of the best action shots of Ryan, which is why it’s so popular.
Ryan is a baseballing legend with most seasons completed in baseball history, so this card should be high on your wishlist.
1984 Topps Astros Batting & Pitching Leaders #66
Speaking of Ryan and the Astros, there’s another card from this set that includes him that deserves a mention – it’s the #66 card.
It’s not often that you’ll see a card like this from a subset so high on a to-do list.
However, this card is pretty rare in high conditions, especially compared to some other cards from the set. It also features Nolan Ryan, so those are some of the main reasons why you should consider getting this card.
1984 Topps Tony Gwynn #251
Tony Gwynn’s card from 1984 is also a card worthy of your consideration if you’re looking for the best cards from this set.
Gwynn was one of the most consistent players in the league as he reached a batting average of .300 almost every season. This is impressive considering Gwynn spent almost 20 years in the league.
He’s also a Hall of Famer, which is yet another reason why you might want to consider this card.
