1970s cards are back and they’re gaining popularity when it comes to retro baseball cards. They’re known for their funky designs and of course, some of the biggest baseball legends of all time.
The 1971 Topps baseball card set is filled with superb cards of superstars like Reggie Jackson, Hank Aaron, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Johnny Bench, and many others.
And unlike the baseball cards of today, these cards have actual scarcity to them which makes them more valuable.
You’ll have to work extra hard and spend a bit more to get the best-rated cards from this baseball set.
Perhaps you’re someone who’s found an old stack of cards hidden somewhere in your uncle’s garage or you’re simply looking for the best cards from that era to revive some of the nostalgia hidden within yourself.

1971 Topps Basebal Card Set – Basic Info
Before we get into the cards, let’s talk about the 1971 Topps baseball card set for a bit.
Topps baseball cards have been around for quite a while up until 1971, so collectors were already well aware of the popularity of these Topps cards. The first Topps cards were already present in 1949 with the likes of Babe Ruth included, of course.
But in terms of card design and looks, the progress was quite slow up until the 1970s, when big changes started happening.
The 1971 set was already slightly different from the 1970 set. It included a bit more graphical elements and of course, an autograph. For reference, here’s what a card from the 1970s baseball set would look like:
Another major difference between the 1971 Topps set and the previous sets was the size. It included a whopping 752 cards, which was record-breaking in terms of set size.
Among those cards were, of course, player cards, but the set also included some specialty cards. These include team cards as well as cards of award winners and various types of different cards you can collect, including Playoffs cards and World Series highlights.
One of the downsides of the 1971 Topps cards was the black borders around the image, which were susceptible to damage. As you might be aware, black is quite vulnerable when it comes to aging, so you’ll probably struggle to find many high-graded cards.
Best Cards from the 1971 Topps Baseball Set
So now that you know a bit more about the set, let’s take a gander at some of the best 1971 Topps baseball cards that you can collect.
1971 Topps Thurman Munson #5 (1970 Topps All-Star Rookie)
At the number one spot when it comes to card value we have the #5 card, which is Thurman Munson’s card.
Munson’s card stands out from the set because of a slightly different design from the rest. On the majority of other cards, you’ll find portraits of players, while Munson’s card featured the player in action. It also features a horizontal design.
The second difference is, of course, the Topps 1970 All-Star Rookie badge on the left – dedicated to Munson’s Rookie of the Year award from the 1970s.
And of course, Munson’s cards have always been popular, but probably not many of them are more popular than his rookie card and this one from 1971.
It’s the most valuable card from the 1971 baseball card set for sure.
1971 Topps Willie Mays #600
Willie Mays is one of the biggest ever superstars in the world of baseball. By 1971, he was already a veteran at the grand old age of 40, but Mays was still going strong for the SF Giants.
Mays’ Topps baseball cards have always been popular, but with the many years in the league and his growing influence, these cards started gaining even more value.
Similar trends can be seen with other cards where players had a lengthy career, such as Nolan Ryan.
To top it off, Mays also had a good season with the Giants in 1971 despite his age, so this card remains to be one of the most popular ones from the set.
1971 Topps Roberto Clemente #630
Roberto Clemente was one of the biggest names in the 1971 Topps baseball set.
Before the season, many people had doubts over Clemente and his future in the league. Clemente was 37, and before the season, it seemed as though Clemente’s career was going to naturally decline.
But in 1971, he proved all his doubters wrong.
Not only did the Pirates win the World Series this season, but Clemente also managed to win the MVP award for the World Series.
While Clemente was already a huge star before the 1971 season, this helped him to cement himself at the very top.
1971 Topps Johnny Bench #250
Johnny Bench was also one of the biggest names of 1970s baseball, but his 1971 season didn’t go as planned for him.
He had many troubles and as a result, the Cincinnati Reds struggled in the 1971 season. But despite that, Bench remained at the club and delivered for the team a season later.
Despite the on-the-field struggles, Bench’s 1971 Topps card remains to be one of the best cards from the set.
1971 Topps Nolan Ryan #513
Despite the fact that Ryan has been in the league for almost 5 years by 1971, it today seems as though this card comes from a very early part of his career, considering he lasted until 1993.
In 1971, Nolan Ryan was still behind Tom Seaver in the pecking order, but it was a valuable learning experience for the future Hall of Famer.
Nolan Ryan’s #513 is one of the most valuable cards from the 1971 set.
1971 Topps Hank Aaron #400
Let’s not forget to mention Hank Aaron’s card from 1971. At the time, Aaron was already considered a veteran, but his numbers kept on going strong.
As a Hall of Famer and one of the best players at the time, Aaron’s card remains to be highly valuable.
