1981 Topps Baseball Cards – Set Info and Best Cards

1981 was a historic year for baseball card collectors.

It was the first year when Topps was not the only player on the market. Now, you could choose between Topps, Donruss, or even Fleer!

This was a huge development to the world of baseball cards that we can still see the consequences even today. Topps needed to step up their game or else they were going to get taken over by the other two companies.

Needless to say, Topps delivered.

Not only did they create one of the best and most memorable designs in history, but they also introduced a few spicy features.

About the 1981 Topps Baseball Set

About the 1981 Topps Baseball Set

As you can see from the cover of the 1981 Topps card pack, they started branding themselves as “the real one”. And of course, many people still swore by Topps as the card company with tradition.

1981 was the year when Topps baseball cards (and other cards) started being printed at large.

This meant that because of Donruss and Fleer cards, these Topps cards started being cheaper and more available around the country.

There was also one notable change, or rather, an innovation that came from Topps in 1981. Namely, they started introducing Topps Traded cards.

Traded cards came out in the second part of the season and they included players that were traded or rookies that weren’t introduced in the set initially. It was a massive change that changed the industry forever.

About the 1981 Topps Baseball Set

In terms of design, Topps still followed their formula from the 1970s and 1980. Perhaps the most memorable thing about these cards was the cap at the bottom of the card which included the position of the player as well as the team they played for.

The checklist for this set includes 726 cards in total. You’ll also find different subsets in this card set, which is used to spice things up a little.

Best 1981 Topps Baseball Cards

So what are the best cards to collect from the 1981 Topps set? Let’s find out.

1981 Topps Harold Baines RC #347

1981 Topps Harold Baines RC #347

Starting this list is the Harold Baines rookie card. It was and still is one of the most recognizable and crucial cards of the set, as it was one of the better rookie cards that you’ll find from 1981.

Harold Baines was drafted by the White Sox and made his debut in 1980. It took Baines a while to get used to the league, but in 1985, he was included in the All-Star team for the first time in his career – the first of his six times.

Baines also won the Silver Slugger Award in 1989 but was traded the same year to the Texas Rangers.

Today, Baines is a Hall of Famer but the interesting thing is that initially, Baines wasn’t voted into the Hall of Fame by the voters. In 2011, he received only 4.8% of the vote but was eventually included in 2019.

This card is among the most valuable cards from the set, with PSA 10 cards of this type collecting several thousand dollars at best.

1981 Topps Kirk Gibson RC #315

1981 Topps Kirk Gibson RC #315

The other famous rookie card from this set was the #315 Kirk Gibson rookie card. Gibson is today known for his impressive appearances for the LA Dodgers, winning the NL MVP award in 1988.

However, he never really managed to follow up on his success from 1988 as he never reached the heights that he achieved that year.

Gibson’s card will be one of the more valuable cards from the set, with the best cards costing several hundred dollars and potentially more.

It’s definitely a card worth mentioning as one of the best rookie cards to come in 1981.

1981 Topps Nolan Ryan #240

1981 Topps Nolan Ryan #240

Nolan Ryan was one of the most dominant pitchers of the late 1970s and the 1980s, and his first season with the Astros came in 1980.

He stayed with the Astros until 1988, but that didn’t mean the end of his career. By 1981, Ryan was already in the league for 15 years, meaning that he was considered one of the most senior players in the league.

When Ryan signed on for the Astros, he became the first million-dollar player ever. It was a record contract for one of the biggest names in baseball.

This card is among the most valuable cards from this set. In the best conditions, it can cost thousands of dollars.

1981 Topps Pete Rose #180

1981 Topps Pete Rose #180

Pete Rose was one of the best players at the time in the league when this card came out. It’s the obvious reason why this card got so much attention.

Rose was undoubtedly one of the best players of his era, but his off-the-field scandals and involvement in betting will always leave a stain on his career. It’s also a reason why Rose wasn’t included in the Hall of Fame.

In 1981, Rose was plying his trade with the Phillies. This card also came after the last time Rose won the Championship with the Phillies in 1980, so it had an additional significance.

Pete Rose won the Silver Slugger Award in 1981, and this is also the reason why this card is among the most valuable cards from the 1981 Topps set.

1981 Topps Dodgers Future Stars #302

1981 Topps Dodgers Future Stars #302

The #302 card was one of the most interesting cards to come out in recent years. It included LA Dodgers’ future stars, which came in the shape of prospects like Jack Perconte, Mike Scioscia, and Fernando Valenzuela.

Valenzuela was obviously the most recognized rookie from this list, making this card a hugely popular one among collectors.

The main problem, however, is getting this card in the best conditions. Because there are no currently PSA 10 recorded, the value of such a card is unknown. You’ll probably also struggle to find higher graded cards like this because it’s simply not easily available.
