1979 Topps Baseball Set Info
1979 was not one of the most notable years when it comes to baseball cards.
There have been many sets in the past that were considered legendary because of their iconic designs or looks. Almost every set until 1979 had something unique or special about it, but the 1979 one doesn’t.
These cards have a pretty basic design with the name of the player and the team name at the bottom of the card, while the focus of the cards is still the images.

But perhaps it’s the simple design that attracts so many people towards these 1979 Topps cards.
What it also has is an amazing lineup of baseball players whose cards you can collect. It might not have the best rookie cards in the world, but it is the veteran cards that make it a standout set – the likes of Nolan Ryan or George Brett spring to mind.

1979 Topps Ozzie Smith RC #116
The only place to start when it comes to the best cards from this set is the Ozzie Smith rookie card numbered #116.
Perhaps the biggest reason why this card is so valuable is because of scarcity. Only a few cards are graded a PSA 10, which means that the highest-graded versions of this card might cost you dozens of thousands of dollars. Even PSA 9 and PSA 8 cards of this type can cost thousands.
Now, Ozzie Smith is one of the biggest stars in baseball. He’s a Hall of Famer and a 15-time All-Star inductee, as well as a one-time World Series champion with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Throughout his career, Ozzie Smith has accumulated 2460 hits and 580 stolen bases, won 13 Golden Glove awards and one Silver Slugger award. There’s absolutely no doubt that this rookie card is special.
But even though Smith was a fantastic shortstop – one of the best in history – it’s the scarcity that drives the value of this card up.
You’ll find that this is one of the most valuable rookie cards from the 1970s.
1979 Topps Nolan Ryan #115
As already mentioned, it’s the older and more experienced players that take the spotlight in the 1979 set, and Nolan Ryan is the prime example of that.
The Nolan Ryan cards from the 1970s will always carry a lot of value because of the long career he had. These are some of the earliest cards of Ryan’s career and that says a lot since he started already in the 1960s and lasted until 1993.
Again, as with the Ozzie Smith card, you’ll find it very hard to find a PSA 10 of this card – the main issue is often centering, but you’ll also see that these cards don’t age particularly well, making it tough for you to find higher-graded cards.
The card features Nolan Ryan getting ready to pitch in what was his last season with the Angels before moving on to the Houston Astros.
1979 Topps Dave Winfield #30
Next up, we have Dave Winfield, also one of the more senior players from the 1979 Topps set, if we may say so. Winfield made his debut in 1973, so in 1979, he was already an established star in the league.
1979 was a great season for Winfield, winning a Gold Glove award for the first time in his career. He also finished third in the MVP voting, which just goes to show what an impressive season he had with the Padres.
And of course, Winfield is also a Hall of Famer and one of the biggest names of baseball in 1979, so his Topps cards of the late 1970s and early 1980s will always be popular and carry value.
1979 Topps Pete Rose #650
Since we’re talking about established players, let’s not forget to include Pete Rose and his 1979 Topps card numbered #650.
But while Rose’s cards will always be popular, there’s something special about this card that makes it worthwhile, especially if you’re a Reds fan.
The reason is that this is the last time Rose would appear as a Reds player in Topps cards. Rose moved on to the Phillies in 1979, so you might see a slight increase in the value of this card compared to some earlier Pete Rose cards.
You should still be able to get lower-graded cards for relatively low prices, but higher-graded cards will cost a lot more.

Last but not least, let’s also mention Paul Molitor’s card as a standout card from the 1979 set.
Molitor was still a young player in 1979 since he came into the league as a rookie in 1978.
He was one of the most promising players of 1979 and his card from this year will always be popular, so make sure you grab yourself a copy.
