1965 Topps Baseball Cards – Best Cards, Checklist, and Set Info

The 1965 Topps baseball set brought one of the most instantly recognizable set designs in history.

These cards featured interesting color combinations with the team names included in these flag shapes, which is a design that Topps decided to implement many times in the future, too.

Of course, as with most old baseball cards, you’ll find it hard to collect cards that are in perfect shape. Such cards will come at a premium price.

However, there are many ungraded or lower-grade options that you’ll be able to find for relatively affordable prices, too.

1965 Topps Baseball Set Info

Compared to the 1964 set, 1965’s cards were very much different. Topps decided to steer clear of the safe design that they used in their previous year’s issue and added some much-needed style with their color options.

The card colors are distributed randomly, and the most commonly used colors on these cards are red, green, yellow, gray, and pink. Thanks to these colors, the 1965 baseball set feels alive and kicking.

As you may see from the above example, conditioning will be a serious issue. Centering, surface quality, and corner issues are the most common.

Not only will you struggle to find PSA 10s and PSA 9s (which will come at a premium price), but you’ll also find many ungraded options.

However, it’s in these ungraded cards where the opportunity lies. While some of the ungraded cards are not fit to be bought, you might find some real gems in there if you’ve got a good eye for the quality of the cards.

The set features a 598-card checklist, which includes some of the more common subsets that Topps also included in subsequent sets. You’ll also find some interesting rookie cards in here, which we’ll go through in a moment.

1965 Topps Best Cards

Let’s take a look at some of the best cards from this historic set.

1965 Topps Mickey Mantle #350

1965 Topps Mickey Mantle #350

When you think about the 1950s and 1960s baseball, one of the first names that springs to mind is Mickey Mantle.

By 1965, Mantle was already something of a veteran for the Yankees, having spent 14 blistering seasons with the New York team. During that period, Mantle won 7 World Championship titles with the Yankees, 3 AL MVP awards, and several other individual awards.

There’s no doubt that Mickey Mantle is one of the baseballing greats. He’s still remembered as one of the best outfielders ever to play the game, albeit he was often troubled by his personal demons such as alcoholism.

In the best conditions, this card will cost thousands of dollars.

1965 Topps Joe Morgan RC #16

1965 Topps Joe Morgan RC #16

If we shift the focus away from the superstars and we focus on the rookies, Joe Morgan was one of the best rookie cards from 1965.

Morgan made his debut for the Houston Astros in 1963, but he was first featured in a Topps set only in 1965. As a Hall of Famer, Morgan’s card remains to be one of the most interesting rookie cards of the 1960s.

Morgan’s best years arguably came in the 1970s though, when plying his trade with the Cincinnati Reds. He won two World Championships (1975, 1976) as well as two MVP awards in those two years with the Reds.

Thanks to his reputation, Morgan’s rookie card is among the most valuable cards from the 1965 Topps set.

1965 Topps Steve Carlton RC #477

1965 Topps Steve Carlton RC #477

The next interesting rookie card from this set is the #477 card, which is Steve Carlton’s rookie card.

Carlton, in his prime, was one of the best pitchers in the league. He was also left-handed, making him one of the most unique pitchers in baseballing history.

Carlton was a 20-year-old man when he was drafted by the Cardinals in 1965, so his best years were still to come. In the first two seasons, he didn’t feature that much but by 1967, he was a regular for the team.

Slowly but surely, Steve Carlton established himself among the finest pitchers in the game. In 1968, he was included in the All-Star team for the first time while also winning his first Championship in 1967.

This card is worth thousands of dollars in better conditions.

1965 Topps Jim Hunter RC #526

1965 Topps Jim Hunter RC #526

The next rookie card that might interest you is the Jim Hunter rookie card, numbered #526.

Jim “Catfish” Hunter was one of the four interesting rookies brought in by the Oakland Athletics in 1965. Hunter, or Catfish, as he was commonly called, became an instant success as he was already an All-Star inductee in 1966.

Catfish helped the Athletics win three World Championships from 1972 to 1974, as he was one of the key players in the process.

You’ll be able to find this card in ungraded conditions, but as a graded option, it’s going to cost thousands.

1965 Topps Tony Perez RC #581

1965 Topps Tony Perez RC #581

The last rookie card that we want to mention here is Tony Perez’s rookie card, which is also seen as one of the most popular cards from this set.

Tony Perez is also a Hall of Famer, which makes this rookie card particularly appealing to those that want the best of the best. Perez was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1964 but first featured in a Topps set a year later.

Today, Perez is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame as well as the Reds Hall of Fame. So if you’re a Cincinnati fan or just a general baseball fan who wants the best cards, then you can’t go wrong with this one.

1965 Topps Willie Mays #250

1965 Topps Willie Mays #250

Next up, we have Willie Mays and his 1965 Topps card.

We need to include this card as it was one of the most popular cards from the set overall. Mays was obviously among the biggest superstars of the game, so this card was always going to be popular among card collectors.
